Frequently Asked Questions about the BSC
Q: General Patient Information
A: Please bring with you to your appointment all insurance information. Also wear comfortable clothes and shoes that are easy to take off and put back on. Please leave all valuables at home. Tell the staff if you are wearing dentures or any medical devices. Your physician will let you know what you should do the day or night before the procedure, such as any special instructions. These may include restrictions on eating or drinking, changes in medications, etc. If you should need to cancel, call your physician at Retina Associates and also the BSC as soon as possible, so that another appropriate date and time can be scheduled.
Q: How is my surgery scheduled?
A: Your surgery appointment at the BSC will be scheduled in our office before you leave. The physicians perform surgery only on certain days of the week, so we will work with your schedule to find a date that works for both you and your physician. The BSC will follow-up with a phone call to review patient history and review any special instructions you must follow. They will then call you again the day before the surgery to give you an exact time of the procedure. If you haven't received a call from BSC by 3:00 pm on the day prior to your scheduled procedure, please call the BSC at (585)-295-8500 between the hours of 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
Q: Will I need a pre-operative physical?
A: Every patient requires a physical prior to surgery and there are several options to get this done. BSC will work with your physician to assess the best option. A physical may be performed by your primary care physician, and/or may take place during a pre-operative visit to the BSC on the day of your procedure. Questions may be directed to the pre-operative nurse at (585)-295-9320 between the hours of 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Q: Will I be able to drive home after my procedure?
A: No. Any patient who requires sedation for a procedure must be driven home by a responsible adult. This is a safety precaution strictly adhered to for your benefit. BSC staff will determine when you can go home safely.
Q: Does insurance cover my procedure?
A: The BSC takes all major insurances and many outpatient surgeries and procedures are covered. The staff at BSC will assist you in verifying what your insurance will cover. Please call the billing staff at (585)-295-9315 with questions. Your insurance company will receive separate bills from your surgeon and anesthesiologist, and from the various lab services. According to some insurance plans, patients are responsible for a nominal co-pay made directly to the outpatient facility at the time of the procedure. BSC accepts cash, check, and credit card (MasterCard, VISA, American Express).
